True-Script — Support

True-Script is a screenwriting app for iPhone and iPad. Type or dictate your screenplay and it is formatted to industry standard as you go, hear it read aloud with Table Read, and export PDF, Final Draft or Fountain. One purchase, no subscription, and everything stays on your device.

How does dictation work?

Open a script and tap Dictate. Say a cue word, then the words for that line: "scene" (for example "scene one, interior, kitchen, night"), "action", "character" and a name, "parenthetical", "cut to". Say "new line" for another line of the same kind and "scratch that" to remove the last line. Tap Stop when you are done. Everything dictated can be undone in one step.

Dictation says it is unavailable

True-Script only uses speech recognition that runs on your device, and never sends your voice anywhere. It works in English. If it says unavailable, open the iPhone Settings app, go to General → Keyboard and turn on Enable Dictation, then try again. Typing always works.

The microphone permission is stuck

  1. Open the iPhone Settings app
  2. Scroll down and tap True-Script
  3. Turn Microphone and Speech Recognition on
  4. Reopen the app and try again

Table Read sounds robotic. Can it sound better?

Table Read uses the voices built into your iPhone or iPad. Apple's free Enhanced and Premium voices sound far more natural: open Settings → Accessibility → Spoken Content → Voices → English and download a few. True-Script uses the best ones automatically, and you can choose a voice for each character with Voices.

Can I read a part myself?

Yes. In Voices, tap a character and choose I'll read this part. Table Read leaves that character's lines silent and highlighted while it reads the rest.

How do I add scene numbers?

Tap Pages, then Scene numbers. Numbers print in both margins and stay locked when you add new scenes.

Which files can I import and export?

Export a PDF, Final Draft (.fdx), Fountain or plain text. Import Final Draft (.fdx), Fountain (.fountain) and plain text (.txt) files from the Files app.

How do I back up my scripts?

In the library, tap the settings button, then Back up library to save every script to Files or iCloud Drive. Restore from backup adds any missing scripts and never overwrites ones you already have. Your scripts are also included in your normal iPhone or iPad backup.
